Mick Green 2009
Mick Green
Several years ago I started putting the odd gig in for The Pirates. My point of contact was Mick Green. At that time he was still working with Van Morrison and I think also Paul McCartney. I always got on great with Mick. In 2006, I was asked by one of our Swedish promoters, Micke Finnell to put together a hard hitting blues rock three piece. I was working with The Animals but thought it would be good to do a side project. I immediately telephoned Mick Green and John Coghlan from Status Quo. They both agreed it would be a good unit. Sadly the band never materialised due to every ones tight work schedule. I continued booking Mick out on the odd gig. Then in 2008, I called Mick and asked him if he fancied playing with me and Animals and Friends. He thought it was a great idea. I scheduled some dates for early 2009 but sadly due to Micks health he was unable to do these shows. I resheduled them to the the summer and Mick was able to do the dates. We performed all the classics inc Shaking All Over, Please Don't Touch, I'll Never Get Over You, A Shot of Rhythm n Blues, I Can Tell etc. We had plans to do more dates and maybe even record but sadly I got a call in December 2009 from Micks wife Karen, she said Mick had gone back into hospital. I called him the week before he passed away and spoke with him, he seemed in good spirit, but later Karen told me he wasn't eating and was very weak. I got a call from the family on 11th January saying that Mick had passed away. I was touring Germany and so that night we performed one of his songs in the set. It was an honour and a pleasure to work with this wonderful player and fantastic human being. RIP.
